Cannabinoids May Help Prevent Alzheimer's Disease

This 2005 study showed how cannabinoids may be useful for a whole host of different Alzheimer's Disease pathological factors. Researchers showed that cannabinoids play an important, protective role in the brain. When they administered a chemical known as WIN 55,212-2, a synthetic analog to tetrahydrocannabinol, to rats, they found that it was able to prevent cognitive impairment and the buildup of β-amyloid peptide (which is one of the characteristics of Alzheimer's disease). They concluded that the cannabinoid system and cannabinoid receptors are very involved in Alzheimer's disease, and that cannabinoids can prevent its neurodegenerative effects.
